SwabCap Solves Challenge of Disinfecting IV Connectors

Description: Jayne Lee, BSN, MPH, CIC explains how implementing SwabCap at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital (Pinehurst, N.C.) solved the problem of nurses’ not complying with the hospital's IV needleless connector disinfection policy. Inadequate disinfection increases the risk of catheter-related bloodstream infections. The hospital's nurses can choose between using SwabCap and swabbing the connectors – and 87% choose SwabCap.

Study Shows SwabCap Passively Disinfects IV Connectors
Description: Robert B. Dawson, MSA, CRNI describes a study showing that SwabCap achieved passive disinfection of IV needleless connectors after five minutes of attachment. The conectors were disinfected with requiring drying time for the alcohol disinfectant. Dawson, who presented the research at the 2010 Association for Vascular Access annual meeting, says the results indicate that SwabCap can help reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections.
